Okay – let’s face it. We’ve all done it. Bought this action, that template, this awesome online workshop… and the list goes on. The web has created a plethora of products and information to purchase, and as a new photographer it can be VERY tempting to invest in products that a) you don’t necessarily need at this point (or ever!) and/or b) you’ll never take the time to listen to/implement (in the case of online workshops).

I have been there and still fall prey on a somewhat regular basis :-) . My experience, however, is that I end up spending money unnecessarily – for a number of products that I NEVER EVEN USE (for example, Photoshop Actions, different templates for cards or coffee table books, and the list goes on and on…). This can also happen with products that are informational/educational – where you are required to take action on your end, with something like online workshops, ‘How To’ online programs, etc.

Even in preparing to launch this blog – I found myself feeling obligated to buy a number of different programs about building a better blog, etc. – and what I realized is that ONE would have been just fine. Instead, I invested in a number of different ones – that I simply don’t have the time to listen to. Chances are that some of them will slip into oblivion and that my bank account will be worse for wear because of it.

Don’t get me wrong – some of these products are absolutely fantastic and provide a lot of value. I’m simply asking you to think twice about purchases that you may not really need and you buy in a moment of impulse – because it will save you significant amount of cash in the long run.

Lastly, try and stay off the ‘next big thing’ train. This ties into the overall topic of this blog – but also speaks to keeping you and your brand original – and about staying true to your style – versus someone else’s style.

BOTTOM LINE…

If you do end up making online purchases, make sure that they:

  • Suit you and your brand
  • Add value to your business
